She felt called to work with adolescents in need of more guidance and shelved the option of being a professor. From 2008-2009, Kimberly worked at Houston Can Academy, a charter school for at-risk youth, a population of teens who are either pregnant, on probation, and/ or have been expelled from most HISD schools. Surviving that year was one of the most heart breaking and illuminating experiences of Kimberly’s life. It was there that she realized that children’s needs must be met holistically as early as possible. An educator’s dedication cannot thrive in a system that merely views a child as a test score. When Kimberly heard about the Upper Elementary teaching assistant’s position at The Post Oak School and began to research Maria Montessori’s pedagogy, she knew she had to work in that environment.
When Kimberly is not teaching, she is most content cooking vegetarian meals in the late afternoon, dancing salsa and bachata in the evening, and waking early in the morning to practice meditation, yoga and martial arts.
