Big Bend National Park
Elaine Schweizer
This course saw a group of students travel to Big Bend National Park for a week of hiking, learning “leave no trace” principles, identifying plants and geology, viewing cave art, canoeing, and bonding as a group.
“The last thing to do before dinner was to take a quick walk to the spring. It was obvious there was a lot of water because of the abundance of cottonwoods growing in a line, which was a huge contrast to the bare cacti and ocotillo we were used to seeing on the trail. We sat at the small stream for a while listening to the wind blow through the tree and theorizing why certain plants grew where they were.”
