An Incredible Morning for Giving Back

An Incredible Morning for Giving Back

As the temperature dipped on Monday in anticipation of an epic Houston snowstorm, families and staff gathered to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy. As we have for the last several years, about 30 participants gathered to create warm blankets for families at Santa Maria Hostel. Throughout the morning, Dr. King’s speeches played softly in the background, sparking conversations about how these blankets would be used to bring comfort and warmth to women and families in need.

Students ranging from YCC to High School gathered and, true to the Montessori spirit, contributed in ways that suited their individual abilities: some worked independently, carefully knotting fleece edges, while others collaborated in small groups to measure and cut fleece. Still others decorated lunch bags to donate, while others took breaks to play in the warmth of the gym.

The students’ enthusiasm and focus were heartwarming, underscoring Post Oak’s commitment to nurturing empathy and empowering our community to exemplify compassion. By the end of the event, more than 20 blankets were completed—a display of dedication and teamwork.

We could feel the chill in the air growing stronger and the anticipation of the winter storm rising, reminding us just how important it is to extend warmth and care to others, especially on a day celebrating Dr. King’s call to serve.

Thank you to everyone who participated and to Santa Maria Hostel for the work they do empowering women and families in the Houston area. Keep an eye on The Post for more opportunities to come together as a community in service of others.
