Braes Interfaith Ministries Food Drive

By Lilly A. ’32

Before the food drive began, our teacher, Mrs. Beth, talked about small local food pantries and how important they are in our community. Our class got to decorate collection boxes with lots of really cute food, and we put them around the school. Each day we collected the things that people brought in. At the end we got to sort and pack up all the items. A lot of tuna! A representative from each elementary class got to go on the bus with Mrs. Beth and Anthony, our driver from the facilities team. When we got to the food pantry to deliver it was closed! They had had an emergency, but that meant all the representatives got to help again later. This week, the food pantry sent a truck to collect the items, and we got meet the director, Eloy Montez, and load the truck. My favorite part was getting to go on The Post Oak School bus and loading the items on the food pantry’s truck. We all worked together. I really hope we get to volunteer there one day!

A group of students loaded up the school activity bus with our community’s donations to Braes Interfaith Ministries.

Operation Stocking Stuffers

Our class does this fundraiser to help families that are in need and help make their Christmas special. Our part was to collect toys. We made boxes and flyers around the school. When our class is done collecting the toys we bring the boxes and put them outside our class. Then the fire truck from the Houston Fire Department comes to the school and collects the toys. The firefighters give us a tour of the fire truck and we get to go to the top and take a picture. We do this once every year.

This is a fun class event, a fundraiser, and a class activity and most importantly it helps the community. Sahas A. ’31 says, “The toy drive is a chance for people who don't have much to have a good life.” This event makes us feel happy and helpful.
