Post Oak School students had a blast at their community service event, where they read to animal shelter dogs, cats, and even rabbits at Citizens for Animal Protection (CAP). The animals gained socialization as the students sharpened their reading skills (read about the science here).
After a brief introduction and safety briefing from CAP’s Humane Education and Events Coordinator Robyn Baxter, the students spread out around CAP’s large facility, with many animals to choose from. To help foster a connection, staff were available to tell anecdotes about the animals.
Of course, we all wanted to take home an animal! But parents stayed strong and kids were reassured that all the animals there were safe and would find happy homes. Kids could also come back for reading time any Tuesday or Thursday from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m.
Student Teagan Skeuse said, “it was so fun to spend time with the animals today. They don’t get to spend a lot of time out of their cages, and the cat we played with and read to was so happy.”
Fellow student Alina Peterson shared, “I loved being with the cats and seeing people walk out carrying boxes with meowing sounds coming out of them, meaning a cat got adopted!”
Afterward, we met up for treats and social time at a bubble tea place. The kids watched K-pop music videos, enjoyed their sweet drinks, and everyone had an opinion about the new Taylor Swift album!
We look forward to our next community service event on May 11, from 8:00 to 9:20 a.m. at Blackshear Elementary. The following weekend there is another opportunity on May 19, from 9 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Houston Food Bank—sign up and text your friends to join. Community service is always more fun with friends! And because hard work deserves recognition, if there’s interest, we will schedule a social event afterward.
