Gardening at the Bissonnet Campus

Gardening at the Bissonnet Campus
Johnna Gluth, Community Service Co-Chair

We turned our service focus to our Post Oak School community last Saturday, teaming up with POPA co-chairs Meredith Smith, Sheryl Abrahams, and Jess Matos. Together, we breathed fresh life into the Elementary garden beds on the Bissonnet Campus. A group of parents, students, teachers, and staff soaked in the spring sunshine and beautiful weather as we cleaned out beds, amended soil, and planted flowers and companion crops.

This service event had been in the works for many months after an idea sprouted to provide logistical support for the Elementary classes as they rejuvenate their gardens. After a POPA outing to Skyfarm, an initiative run by Blackwood Farm at POST Houston, a strategy of companion planting—growing varying plant species to maximize garden space, crop yield, improve soil, and repel pests and weeds—was suggested. Working with teachers and volunteers to assess the needs of each class, plans and bed maps were soon underway.

Chatter and laughter filled the air as volunteers dug into the dirt, connected with new and old friends, and learned more about companion planting. Our efforts brought sweet rewards in the form of delicious lettuce, green onions, and mint that were salad-ready!

Stay tuned for future service efforts for our Post Oak School community and to get involved with the gardening efforts underway. One more service opportunity is on the calendar for Saturday, May 10th at Blackshear Elementary. We hope to see you there!
