Volunteering at Bell Park

Volunteering at Bell Park
Claire T., Senior

I’ve been volunteering at Bell Park every Thursday with my friend and classmate, Sophia, since junior year. We started off helping with weeding and other yard work, before Barbra and Chaille, the two women who have made The Bell Park Project possible, asked us if we would like to paint the utility boxes. Immediately we agreed and got to work. Sophia and I spent many Thursdays after that painting the boxes with bluebonnets.

Along with the painting, we helped to plant new greenery and flowers, design and put up flyers, host service days, take out dead and unwanted plants, and work with the Parks Department. It quickly became such a gratifying and amazing experience for me. Through The Bell Park project, I was able to meet and form relationships with people living in the neighborhood, representatives from Councilwoman Abbie Kamin's office, people from the Houston Parks Department, and others who just wanted to help out. I was able to connect with so many different people from all around Houston—all towards our goal of fixing up the park. Overall, Bell Park has allowed me to grow, learn about the city, make a difference, and have a fun time with Sophia. It was an unforgettable experience and was so much fun to be a part of! If you have time, and are in the Museum District, make sure you go check out Bell Park!
