Reminiscing on Post Oak’s Winter Wonderland Dance

On November 12, 2022, students of Post Oak’s High School were raisin’ the roof at the new and improved version of the formerly known Fall Fling: Winter Wonderland.

In the first semester of each year, our high school gives students from both inside and outside of Post Oak a chance to join in a night filled with laughter, mingling, and fist-pumping. Charging $20 per ticket, students were ecstatic—the entirety of Spirit Week had led up to this moment. And so, with flawless timing, the school doors swung open. As students swaggered into the building in their best attire, the smell of hot chocolate lingered in the air whilst hits from a decade ago played. It was a Saturday, and the Bearkats were ready to party.

At the start of the night, people tried their best to jam out to Ed Sheeran and Maroon 5, invoking disturbingly vivid memories of middle school. The DJ was later aided by seniors Kilali L. (’23) and Sara P. (’23) for the music selection—as Everest L. (’24) explained, this is when “the party arrived.” Once the music began to fit the articulate tastes of the audience, the dance floor became a magnet. In an instant, the freshman and sophomore boys had formed a mosh pit in the center of the room.

To quote one anonymous student, Winter Wonderland was “very Post Oak.”

For the rest of the evening, party-goers relished the beautiful decorations and food array, ranging from hot chocolate to a cheese and cracker spread. Isabelle S. (’23), the mastermind behind the decorations, claimed that her favorite parts were meeting students from different schools, the photo booth, and the hot chocolate bar. In fact, according to several other students, the hot chocolate bar seemed to be one of the main highlights of the night. And so, with stomachs full of cocoa and feet beginning to ache, students danced the night away (AKA until 10 p.m.).

When asked to describe the dance in a few words, students said that the dance had a “youthful atmosphere,” was “lowkey” and “quaint,” and was the “most interesting thing I’ve spent 20 bucks on.” My personal favorite comes from Anderson W. (’23), a senior, who claimed that it was the “wildest party [he’d] ever been to.” By the end of the night, Andy had befriended the hot chocolate server.
