California born and Philippines raised, Fanita Spears-Mogro joins our Elementary team with 16 years of teaching experience, a career she began in early 2003 right here in Houston. She started volunteering for her aunt who was a school principal not knowing this will be the start of her journey in education. And it was after dabbling in broadcasting that Fanita shifted her focus to the classroom.
Fanita got her start at a magnet school where she worked with young deaf children and later taught middle schoolers with cognitive disabilities. These early experiences instilled a love for special education, and she went on to get further certifications in this field, as well in ESL. In many ways, her start in education echoed the first experiences of Maria Montessori, who worked with mentally disabled children, and in doing so, discovered the power of working with each child at their unique developmental level. A decade into her career, Fanita was introduced to Montessori by a friend and was immediately taken with the holistic approach. She saw how it allowed teachers and students to work together rather than struggle for control in the classroom. Fanita has been following the child ever since, growing her knowledge and practice of Montessori with certification through Association Montessori Internationale (AMI), and as a teacher at both the lower and upper elementary levels at Alief Montessori Community School. She now joins Post Oak as our Upper Elementary 1 lead teacher.
Fanita brings many personal interests to her classroom and our community. An avid fan of bullet journaling, an experimental baker, aspiring singer, and gardener, she also dabbles in art projects, such as paper collage and rock painting. She and her husband enjoy caring for their German Shepherd, Bruno, and packing up their vehicle for road trips with their two sons in the backseat. Fanita brings to Post Oak her warm energy, a love of history, performing arts, and class pets, as well as an ever-expanding passion for Montessori. We are excited to welcome her to our Bearkat family.
