The Montessori Adult

HMI offers training to persons who show suitability for the study of child development and for working with children aged three to six. The work of the Montessori adult requires emotional maturity, intellectual acuity, integrity, commitment, and no small degree of humility. Applicants should have a bachelor’s degree. Those without a degree will be considered on the basis of maturity and experience. The process toward admission includes a written application, three letters of reference, and an interview. Applicants are notified in writing of their admission status.

Code of Conduct

The purview of the Association Montessori Internationale (AMI) is to protect and promulgate the authentic Montessori Method, and that of HMI is the training of adults who may become teacher-guides of young children.  Neither organization is designed toward regulating individual conduct.  Dr. Montessori made clear on many occasions, however, that the formation of a teacher of young children is a high calling marked by rigorous standards:

The real preparation for education is a study of one’s self.  The training of the teacher who is to help life is something far more than a learning of ideas.  It includes the training of character; it is a preparation of the spirit. (Maria Montessori, The Absorbent Mind, 1944/1967, p. 131) HMI holds the training staff to a high standard of personal conduct and expects trainees to embrace a similar goal.  All participants in the course are expected to conduct themselves in a manner which respects other participants and, indirectly, the children whose welfare we are in training to serve.

Appropriate behavior includes:

•    Respect for the integrity, intelligence and feelings of other participants
•    Respect for the work environment shared with others
•    Respect for the possessions of others
•    Maintenance of one’s own possessions
•    Courteous participation in lectures and in presentations of lessons
•    Adherence to the specific rules for use of the Prepared Environment (model classroom)

Scholarships

HMI does not offer a scholarship fund. AMI/USA offers financial aid opportunities for AMI teacher trainees through the MES Fund, Inc.  The MES Fund was endowed through memorial gifts in honor of Margaret E. Stephenson, who devoted her life to Montessori teacher training in the United States. Many prospective trainees obtain sponsorship by a Montessori school with which they have an affiliation, frequently working out a loan arrangement by which the cost of training is repaid through a number of years of service to the school.

HMI is a Montessori teacher training institute affiliated with Association Montessori Internationale (AMI). HMI was founded by The Post Oak School in Bellaire, Texas. The Post Oak School is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in the state of Texas, and the oldest AMI Montessori school in the Southwestern United States.
